Syracuse cruises past Lafayette in season opener, 97-63 (full coverage)

The Orange open their regular season with a 97-63 victory over the Leopards and increase their record in season openers to 41-5, winning 17 of the last 18 opening contests.

Joseph Girard III and the Boeheim brothers led the Orange offense accounting for 56 of the 97 points scored. Girard III had a game-high 20 points and seven assists. Buddy and Jimmy Boeheim each had 18 points.

After an undefeated preseason, Syracuse begins regular season play when it take on Lafayette at home tonight. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.

Syracuse and Lafayette have met eight times during the regular season and the Orange have won all eight encounters. The teams have not met since 1995, when the Orange defeated the Leopards 87-63 on Nov. 25, 1995. In seven of the eight meetings, Syracuse has prevailed by a double-digit margin.
