11.7 million Americans finally get their unemployment tax refunds after three months, totaling $14.4 billion

11.7 Americans were eligible for a tax break that made it so the first $10,200 of unemployment collected was untaxed.

Those that filed before the law was passed March 11 are being refunded if they overpaid on their taxes.

The tax break is for those that earned less that $150,000 in 2020.

The average refund is $1,600 but varies person to person depending on income, tax bracket, and how much of their earnings came from unemployment benefits.

Many will see their refunds direct deposited and some will get a check in the mail.

The IRS is recalculating taxes in phases, and started with the simplest ones at the beginning of summer. The process started with single filers and married couples.

More complicated returns are taking longer to process.

If people are still waiting, they could use the IRS online tracker application to utilize the amended return status tool. Taxpayers may also request a copy of their record through the mail or by calling 1-800-908-9946.

The IRS is expected to still send check through to the end of the year.
