Nearly 300 workers at Garlock in Palmyra have gone on strike.
The walkout was caused by a contract dispute between workers and management.
Garlock is one of Wayne County’s largest employers, but members of the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers Local 588 went on strike after the weekend.
They voted on Saturday to not ratify a four-year contract offered by the company.
An extension had been provided to employees through October 31. However that expired over the weekend when the date came-and-went without a new contract.
Longtime employees say the company has offered less-and-less with every collective bargaining agreement. Around 142 out of 190 union members who showed up for the vote over the weekend rejected the deal.
“We need decent wages,” Vicki Synyard said. She’s been with the company for more than 40 years. “We need to be able to support our families too.”
