Tiny island on Canandaigua Lake with offensive name gets new identity: Meet Skenoh Island

The small island on the corner of Canandaigua Lake previously known as ‘Squaw’ will now be called Skenoh.

The island was renamed due to concerns about the name being offense.

Canandaigua City Council proposed a resolution last year changing the name of the island. That measure was supported.

The Town of Canandaigua and Ontario County Board of Supervisors did not weigh in on it.

Skenoh means health or peace. The name has been approved by the state Geographic Names Committee and the DEC.
