Employees may now ask employers for shared work in place of layoffs

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed into law a worker’s right to ask their employer to cut hours and utilize unemployment to offset losses for everyone instead of just being laid off.

This is to help the Shared Work Program, which only started being used more frequently during the pandemic.

This allows workers to ask their employers to have everyone share the work load instead of laying everyone off and only rehiring a few people.

Workers also can not be retaliated against for asking for this.

The Shared Work Program helps people to keep their jobs while it’s hard, as well as let the company keep all of their workers they’ve trained.
