Laws are needed to protect people from online harm including bullying and coercion

Two major issues still happen today with the internet being at society’s fingertips: cyberbullying and distributing sexual images of someone in an attempt to coerce them.

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed two laws to help combat these major issues.

One of the measures creates a task force to address and come up with ways to combat online bullying. It also finds ways to help children and adults who fall victim to cyberbullying.

Another bill now includes the creation and distribution of sexual images as part of the definition of coercion. Many refer to this as “sextortion.”

This offers more clarity on laws surrounding the distribution of sexual images so a person guilty of the crime can really face appropriate punishment.
