The heating bills for New Yorker’s are expected to see record increases this winter by over 40% in some areas.
New York Senator and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is trying to find ways to help residents offset the costs coming their way.
One step in his plan to help pay heating bills is to call on the Department of Health and Human Services to quickly release the funds that will help pay for heat, which was more than $3 billion last year.
The second is to increase the amount in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program by $100 million.
He plans to focus on LIHEAP during the next budget.
The program helps families on fixed, low incomes and gives monthly benefits in the form of better heating or air-conditioning units, weatherization, and fuel.
