A fifth grade child from Suffolk Virginia died of COVID-19.
Teresa Sperry was ten years old and passed away Monday.
She attended Hillpoint Elementary where the district has reported 60 new positive cases during the week of Sept. 20 through 26. Two were at Hillpoint.
Masks are a requirement for Suffolk students and staff, and Sperry was too young for a vaccine.
Experts are working try and get Pfizer vaccines ready for kids ages 5-11 this fall.
Sperry is the second child who has died of COVID in the region.
Two months ago Schwanda Corprew, 17, a student at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk Virgina died due to the virus.
Virginia’s state health department has reported 12 deaths related to COVID in people under the age of 19.
