The Elmira Correctional Facility has reopened after a lockdown that started on September 2.
According to New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision officials, the lockdown and full search of the facility was approved due to an ongoing issue with safety and security of staff and incarcerated individuals.
The facility was reopened slowly after the search was completed.
Officials did not specify the reason for the lockdown, but violence at state prisons has been increasing over recent months – including several lockdowns at Auburn Correctional Facility.
