Sex abuse case is thrown out in Oswego County after juror admits she’s related to the District Attorney

A juror for a sex abuse case in Oswego County turned out to be related to the District Attorney, resulting in the case being thrown out.

Apparently when asked if anyone knew someone in law enforcement, the woman raised her hand but was not asked a follow-up question.

Following the trial, DA Gregory Oakes found that the juror was his first cousin once removed through social media and he alerted the defense attorneys.

The defendant was convicted on multiple counts of sex abuse this past May and following the discovery of the juror relation, Oswego County Judge Walter Hafner Jr. decided he will need to be retried.

Oakes had not originally tried the case and plans to file an appeal on the ruling.
