Police responded to a call about a domestic dispute involving a loaded firearm on Tuesday in the town of Vienna.
Malcom Tilton, 69, had used the gun to shoot and kill the family dog after a dispute with his wife.
Tilton was arrested on charges of animal cruelty.
Tilton was sent to the hospital to evaluate his mental health after he was released on an appearance ticket.
He will appear in the Town of Vienna Court at a later date.
