Dr. Stephen Thomas, Upstate Hospital’s top infectious disease specialist, has said he will not be in attendance at the New York State Fair this year due to having an unvaccinated person at home.
He stated that his daughter is too young to get the vaccine, and he doesn’t want to risk contracting the disease.
The only precaution enforced at the State Fair is the use of masks indoors after an executive order was issued for Onondaga County.
While he cites these reasons for not going, he does say that an outbreak isn’t a guaranteed conclusion because there are many things to help keep the virus at bay.
He also stated that the majority of the fair is outdoors, which alone reduces the rate of transmission greatly.
Dr. Thomas’s best advice is that if someone chooses to go, just to protect themselves the best they can.
