The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association reported Harmful Algal Blooms as early as June 29 this year, the earliest documented date.
The volunteers remained diligent in testing many areas where blooms were suspected, with only one appearing to be a worst case scenario, and other clearing up themselves before beaches needed to be closed.
The program relies heavily on volunteers, this year reaching up to 71 volunteers since the programs inception in 2018 with only v16 volunteers.
The volunteers are trained to observe lakes in the region and report sightings of possible HABs until October.
