The village of Interlaken is hoping to modify their State Pollution Discharge Elimination System discharge permit and applying for two permits to be able to do so.
The goal is to modify the wastewater treatment plant located on Cayuga Street.
The DEC has decided to issue a modification to the permit to include updated measures.
The wastewater treatment plant was originally built in 1956 and Mayor Richard Richardson has said the village is attempting to secure a $5.1 million dollar upgrade.
DEC requirements are changing for wastewater plants and the current one will not meet them.
The plant is also contributing to phosphate in Cayuga Lake right now and an update would reduce that.
