GOOD SPOTS: Taughannock Falls State Park, hiking with a beautiful view

Taughannock Falls in Trumansburg, New York is one of the most beautiful natural attractions the Finger Lakes Region has to offer.

At 215 feet tall, the waterfall can be seen from above on the rim trail, or below at the end of the gorge trail. It’s is the tallest free falling waterfall on this side of the Mississippi and taller than the Niagara Falls. Though taller, there is far less water.

The State Park offers campsites and cabins, a boat launch, marina, and a beach. Vehicle parking for a day visit in the park is $9 per vehicle, or for someone who frequents New York State Parks, the Empire Pass is an option. The passes are $80 for the Summer 2021 season (expires December 31, 2021), $205 for a three year pass (expires December 31, 2023) or $320 for a five year pass (expires December 31, 2025).

The 2021 swimming season will run from July 1 through September 6 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily.

The 2021 camping season will run from April 16 through October 17 by reservation only.

Permits are available for weddings and special events as well as the rental of pavilions in the park.

The park is a great place for bird watchers to spot various species including the Common Loon, Great Horned Owl, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Raven and Turkey Vulture.

An interesting fact about the water in the falls and gorges is that it actually connects to the Atlantic Ocean. The water flows north into the Seneca River, then into Oswego River, then the eastern end of Lake Ontario, into the St. Lawrence River, and finally the Atlantic Ocean.

Aside from Taughannock Falls State Park offering the beautiful waterfall for which it’s named after, Cayuga Lake is available to patrons to enjoy.

While Seneca Lake is the biggest lake of water, Cayuga Lake is the longest of the Finger Lakes at 38.2 miles long. Its deepest spot is 435 feet.

At the head of the trail to see the waterfall and across the street from Cayuga Lake is the Inn at Taughannock Falls. The venue offers various accommodations as well as four types of restaurants and bars to enjoy. The inn is available to host private events like weddings and parties.
