Heavy rain, damaging winds primary concerns in Tuesday thunderstorms

It’s going to be an active weather afternoon and evening in the Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, and Central New York, according to forecasters with the National Weather Service.

Local meteorologists are also sounding the alarm for possible hazardous weather- as thunderstorms setup with warm, muggy air overhead.

Here are the major concerns, as outlined by FLXWeather.com Meteorologist Drew Montreuil:

– Heavy rain: Flash flooding will be a concern, particularly in areas that have been hit hard by heavy rain lately. It won’t take much rain in those areas for flash flooding to begin.

– Damaging winds: Late in the afternoon and during the early evening hours the strongest winds will be likely in storms that are capitalizing on the most instability overhead. There’s a slight tornado risk within storms that develop during the afternoon, Montreuil says, due to shifting low-level winds. It’s a slight risk, but one worth keeping in mind.
