Juneteenth celebrated in Lyons on June 17th

A celebration was held in Lyons’ Central Park on June 17th to recognize that Juneteenth is now a federal holiday.

50 community members and leaders were in attendance to celebrate the day that slaves in Texas learned of the Emancipation.

Local speakers included Wayne County Public Defender Andy Correria, Wayne County Sheriff candidate Steve MacNeal, Community Leader James Shuler, Summer O’Brien of the non-profit NY Families for Tomorrow, Austin Edick, a resident of Sodus, and Gene Bavis, Co-Chairperson of the Wayne County Bicentennial Committee.

Everyone shared experiences, history, happiness for the day to be recognized and even a poetic journey.
