Fairport man sentenced to life in prison for Canandaigua murder

A Fairport man was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a state prison after fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend and seriously injuring another person in Canandaigua.

It happened on January 2, 2020.

William Fricke was sentenced to 25 years to life for the attempted murder of Dennis Gruttadaro, and life without the possibility of parole for the murder of Julie Baker.

“You have absolutely no remorse…you deserve to spend the rest of your life in prison,” said sentencing Judge Kitty Karle.

“No one should ever have to see their beautiful friend gasp for air and die in their arms,” Gruttadaro said during sentencing, noting that he still struggles to breathe due to the injuries he sustained in the attack.

Baker’s daughters also spoke, expressing the difficulty and void created by the murder.
