Lawmakers approve measure that would quicken unemployment application process

Lawmakers in the state Senate on Monday approved a measure aimed to quicken the notification process for unemployment benefits in the state of New York.

After unemployment rates soared amid the pandemic, issues arose with notification times between clients and the unemployment office. If approved, this proposal will require contact to be made to applicants within thirty days of them furnishing documentation. If there is any reason an answer cannot be given in thirty days, the office must contact the applicant to make them aware.

New York State still remains at an unemployment rate of around 8%, higher than the national average.
