Meaghan Tyrrell looked for an open lane at the 12-meter mark, she twisted left and met a Florida defender, then twisted right and faced another. Meaghan Tyrrell attempted to pass as the ball tumbled to the ground when her stick collided with her defenders.
Sam Swart lunged to pick up the ground ball amid the chaos and Florida defenders swarmed her in search of the ball as the whistle blew. The Gators earned possession, cementing Syracuse’s eighth turnover in the first 30 minutes of play.
Less than a minute later, Emily Heller sliced through the 8-meter, positioned herself in front of Syracuse goalie Asa Goldstock and sent the ball into the net to tie the game at 5 heading into halftime.
No. 3 Syracuse (16-3, 8-2 Atlantic Coast) faced No. 6 Florida (18-3, 10-0 American Athletic) in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday. The Gators entered the game on a 15-game win streak, holding opponents to less than 10 goals in all but two matchups this season. But in the quarterfinals, the Orange notched 17 goals against Florida to advance to the NCAA Tournament semifinals.
