There is one Geneva City School District Board of Education seat open this year.
School district voters will fill the five-year term at the May 18 Annual Budget Vote and School Board Election. Incumbent May Farnsworth is running. School board candidate nominating petitions are due to the district clerk, Adrianne Miller, by 5 p.m. on April 28. In Geneva, nominating petitions must be signed by at least 50 qualified voters this year.
School board members oversee and manage the community’s public school system, ensuring the schools are flexible and responsive to the needs of the community. The Geneva City School Board has a seven-member board.
Responsibilities of a board member include: creating a shared vision for the future of education, setting the direction of the school district to achieve the highest student performance, providing rigorous accountability for student achievement results, developing a budget and presenting it to the community, aligning district resources to improve achievement, supporting a healthy school district culture for work and learning, creating strategic partnerships with the community stakeholders, building the district’s progress through continuous improvement, adopting and maintaining current policies, hiring and evaluating the superintendent, ratifying collective bargaining agreements, and maintaining strong ethical standards.
School board candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, and qualified voters in the school district. At the time when the board member takes office, they cannot be employed by the board on which they serve or live in the same household with a family member who is also a member of the same school board.
Once elected, school board members are required by New York State to fulfill mandatory training that includes fiscal oversight training and governance skills training.
