Syracuse holds on to beat North Carolina, 72-70 (full coverage)

Syracuse left fingernail marks on the Carrier Dome court and held on for a 72-70 win over North Carolina on Monday night.

Syracuse led by 10 points with less than three minutes left, and eight points with a minute to go, but the Tar Heels staged a furious rally in the final minutes.

The win lifted Syracuse’s record to 14-8 overall and 8-7 in the ACC. It also revived the Orange’s dwindling hopes for an NCAA tournament bid.

GAME PREVIEW:

Syracuse basketball has lost two straight, at Duke and at Georgia Tech, and now the Orange gets set to host North Carolina on Monday evening at 7 pm from the Carrier Dome as the 2020-21 regular season comes to a conclusion for the ‘Cuse this week.

The Tar Heels (15-8, 9-5) are coming off arguably their best win of this term, as UNC defeated Atlantic Coast Conference leader Florida State at home this past Saturday. North Carolina is presently tied with Clemson for fifth place in the league standings.

For the Orange (13-8, 7-7), meanwhile, it is currently hovering around the No. 9 spot in the ACC race. After its defeats at the hands of the Blue Devils and, most recently, Georgia Tech, Syracuse basketball is pretty far removed from the proverbial bubble for the 2021 Big Dance, according to bracketologists.
