Democrats are moving forward with $1,400 in additional payments to most Americans as part of a COVID-19 relief package. It’s part of a $1.9 trillion deal that tracks with President Joe Biden’s plan to help recover the economy following the pandemic.
“While it is still our hope that Republicans will join us in doing right by the American people, the urgency of the moment demands that we act without further delay,” said Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass.
Meanwhile, Republicans have been critical of the deal based on no ‘bipartisan compromise’. One issue relates to ‘who’ will be eligible for it. White House officials say that the details are being worked out.
There’s a rift between Democrats on who should be eligible for the additional $1,400 payments.
Another major item in that deal would increase the child tax credit for families. Right now it sits at $2,000 maximum per year. It would grow up to $3,600 per child under six, and be left at $3,000 per child for those up to 17.
Payments of the credit could be paid monthly to families, or in one lump sum.
