Port Byron pharmacy owner says they are getting hundreds of calls about COVID vaccine

Getting the vaccine into local residents’ arms has been a challenge. Not just for the state or federal government, but for the folks on the ground actually administering the shots.

The Auburn Citizen recently went one-on-one with Matt Herbst, who operates a pharmacy in Port Byron. His business has been around for 10 years. To date, he thinks there have been about 500 phone calls.

“How do you work and answer the phone 500 times with the same staff?” he told The Citizen. His first order to the state for vaccine doses was met with a batch of 100. In two days those were gone. Going through the process again, he received another 100 doses.

There are less than a half-dozen pharmacies in Cayuga County handling vaccination, which is a challenge given that they are primarily taking care of those 65 and older.

For curious residents the primary question is simple: Will supply demand as increase continues to do so?
