There aren’t a ton of things generating a lot of excitement in brick-and-mortar retail. It was a tough year in 2020 for most of them, and many are downsizing – not upscaling their operations, as shoppers shift to online.
Even the overall future of shopping malls was part of this weekend’s Editor’s Note.
But one retailer has plans to open a store that’s been under construction at Eastview Mall for approximately a year. Dick’s Sporting Goods, currently located across the road from Eastview Mall in a plaza, will relocate to a massive, destination center at the former Sears anchor.
There will be a turf field at the store, as well as an ice-skating rink in the winter, along with a rock wall for year-round climbing. Of course, the store will also feature the traditional retail aspects with more merchandise than most other Dick’s locations.
The store will be a 100,000 square foot space with a 17,000 square foot partly-outdoor facility that will be able to accommodate practices, community events, as well as a number of other sport-related outdoor offerings.
Company officials said that they chose Victor for this first-of-its-kind expansion because of the success the company has seen to date there. Eastview Mall is also considered one of the strongest, and most-viable shopping malls in Upstate New York.
