The Ontario County Humane Society says they were assisted by the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office responding to an animal abuse complaint in the town of South Bristol.
They responded to a residence on Gulick Road to check on the welfare of a domestic rabbit named ‘Blue’ in a rabbit hutch.
The hutch didn’t have any bedding or protection from the weather. They say at the time it was snowing and the temperature was well-below freezing.
A neighbor reported that the rabbit appeared to be alive the previous day, but looked dead on December 7th.
Investigation determined that the rabbit froze to death.
As result of the investigation Fletcher Carter, 37, of Naples was charged with animal cruelty – a misdemeanor. He was issued an appearance ticket to answer the charge at a later date.
The Humane Society asks pet owners to not let animals outdoors for an extended period of time during winter weather. “If you believe an animal is at risk contact this office at 585-396-4590 or your local law enforcement agency,” the Humane Society said.
