Syracuse ends a 1-10 season with a 45-21 loss at Notre Dame (full coverage)

We’ve been talking about next season for a month, and yet there was a stretch late Saturday afternoon when a one-win football team held our attention just a wee bit longer than it probably should have against the No. 2 team in the nation.

Syracuse teased us like it did the last time it faced a national title contender until one mistake snuffed out the upset bid, restored order and opened the floodgates to another one-sided loss.

Soon enough, next year again became top of mind just as quickly as Notre Dame poured on 21 unanswered points in the final 5 minutes of the first half in a 45-21 loss in South Bend, Indiana.

It cemented what we all saw coming for weeks: a 1-10 record, just the second one-win season in more than 70 years.

GAME PREVIEW:

Syracuse football will conclude the 2020 season on Saturday at No. 2 Notre Dame in what will be the end of a year derailed by injury and opt-outs.

The Orange (1-9) is coming off a 36-29 loss to North Carolina State, while the Irish (9-0) cruised to a 31-17 win over North Carolina last week.

The last time these two teams met was in 2017 when Notre Dame easily beat Syracuse 36-3. The Irish has a 6-3 overall record in the series.

With an unblemished record, Notre Dame has already solidified a spot in the ACC Championship game but a win over SU would give the Irish a better shot at clinching a berth in the College Football Playoff.
