Change is coming to one of Auburn’s most-popular grocery stores.
After a story published by the Auburn Citizen on Tuesday, announcing that Aldi would be moving its store from the current location near the Fingerlakes Mall to the former A.C. Moore location in the Auburn Plaza, a member of the corporate communications team confirmed.
They shared excitement about the move, noting that it would open in early-2021, and promised a more in-depth statement to FingerLakes1.com on Wednesday.
The store had been located on Clark Street since opening in 1996. Employees at the store will move to the new location whe nit reopens.
Work had been underway for weeks renovating the property. Michael Wachs, who owns the property with Auburn Associates shared his own excitement about the change with The Citizen. “In today’s retailing environment, whatever it is you’re selling, it’s a battle for relevance. And one category of retailers that makes shopping centers relevant is a supermarket,” he told The Citizen. “Those strip shopping centers that are leaders of the pack are always anchored by a first-in-class supermarket in the region. And Aldi is that.”
This story will be updated when ALDI returns its full statement following news of the move in Auburn.
