Several businesses in Cayuga County have been fined $50 for violating New York’s rules around operation during the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Consent orders were approved and signed this week for four businesses including Ed and Jean’s Market in Port Byron, Family Dollar in Auburn, Kwiik Fill in Auburn, and Maxwell’s Food Store in Auburn.
In all four cases officials say the businesses violated the state’s mandate on masks when social distancing isn’t possible.
Officials said two of the fines were for employees not wearing proper face coverings. This was the case at Maxwell’s and Family Dollar.
The other two fines were connected to customers not wearing proper face coverings.
Larger fines are possible for repeat offenders, but the initial fine is intended to be a learning experience for those involved.
The Citizen reports that Wegmans in Auburn was also sent a consent order for alleged violations of the state’s mandates. However, the company paid the fine without signing the document. An attorney responded to the County’s order and said they were “not responsible for their customers.”
