The lawsuit filed by plastic bag manufacturers and convenience store owners has allowed New York’s law to enforce a plastic bag ban to survive.
The ‘plastic bag ban’ went into effect earlier this year, but hadn’t been enforced due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Advocates have called for the law to be enforced, but the DEC said earlier this summer that it would provide 30 days notice to the state and connected players when the law would begin to be enforced.
Many stores still give our single-use plastic bags, which are banned under the law signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The judge hearing the cases did rule this week that state regulators went too far by allowing stores to hand out thicker plastic bags.
It’s unclear at this time when enforcement of the ban may begin.
