President Trump will pardon Susan B. Anthony on anniversary of 19th Amendment

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said he would pardon Susan B. Anthony, a prominent leader in the women’s suffrage movement.

She was arrested for voting in 1872 in violation of laws at the time, which only allowed men to vote.

She was also a strong anti-slavery pioneer, along with voting rights activist.

The pardon will be issued 100 years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which ensured women the right to vote. It’s known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment.

Anthony was arrested for voting in her hometown of Rochester. She was convicted in a widely publicized trial, and refused to pay the fine. Authorities didn’t take any further action against her.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex,” the Amendment reads, which was passed in 1919, and ratified on August 18th, 1920.
