First responders say the heat likely played a role in the fire that happened at the Steuben County Landfill on Friday.
Firefighters from Bath, the Bath VA, Kanona, and Hammondsport were called to the scene at the Steuben County Landfill to put out the blaze.
The fire was below the surface, according to first responders, who said an excavator was needed to bring it under control.
That took approximately one hour, firefighters said. The cause of the fire is likely the heat, but it remains under investigation.
