State officials say the total number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus have exceeded 30. A total of four people are known to be in voluntary quarantine around the region.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said that there were 11 new cases since Thursday. All of those cases are confined to the New York City area.
“The more you test, the more positives you find,” Cuomo said. “The number has to go up because we’re testing people. We have to find people. We have to contain it.”
Testing priorities, quarantine, and containment tracking are the factors the state is paying close attention to, according to Cuomo.
“While the overall risk level of the novel coronavirus in New York remains low, I want New Yorkers to know that I’m not urging calm. I’m urging reality. I’m urging a factual response as opposed to an emotional response,” Cuomo said. “In New York we have the most sophisticated healthcare system on the globe, and we are continuing to prioritize testing, quarantine protocols and containment tracking to keep New Yorkers safe.”
He also said New York’s congressional delegation should have done more than secure $35 million that was approved for the state to deal with the Coronavirus.
“You’re the federal representatives? I understand that,” Cuomo said. “I also understand New York is being mistreated by the federal government. We are constantly getting the short end of the stick. I understand we’re not on Preisdent Trump’s hit parade, but the delegation’s job is to advocate and deliver and for New York.”
State lawmakers approved a $40 million package to aid in New York’s response to the spread of the virus.
“The reality of the situation is that it’s not enough funding for the state of New York, period,” Cuomo said. “This state routinely gets the short end of the stick from the federal government.”
There are approximately 4,000 people under precautionary quarantine at this time. Two of those individuals are in Wayne County. Two more are in Cayuga County, according to health officials.
