LATEST: Use caution on roads this morning, NWS advisories active now

Give yourself extra time in the commute today and tonight. Conditions will vary throughout the region, and winds will make travel difficult with the light snow that has fallen so far. Follow along with the resources in this story through the end of the week.

And if you’re traveling outside the immediate Finger Lakes region – then things will really get complicated.

  • A Winter Weather Advisory is active for Ontario and Monroe counties until Friday at 4 p.m.
  • A Winter Storm Watch is active from Friday at 4 p.m. until Saturday at 6 p.m. for Wayne, Onondaga, and Northern Cayuga counties.
  • A Wind Advisory is active for most of the region including Seneca, Yates, Schuyler, Steuben and Tompkins counties, who are not in winter advisories.

Here’s what we know now from the National Weather Service about weather in the Finger Lakes:

– Rain is, or has already transitioned to snow. Parts of the area will have significant issues with visibility.

– Strong winds will hammer the region on Thursday. Sharply colder air will also rush in behind this weather system. Lake effect snow, with wind gusts to 45 mph will make conditions difficult in spots.

– Once the widespread snow moves out later this morning, winds will continue to be strong, but lake effect snow will be the most-prominent weather feature. That will be focused outside the immediate area.

That said, it’s not going to be a blizzard. Changeable conditions and wind-driven snow are likely if you’re traveling, so use caution and give yourself some extra time.

Here’s what the remainder of Western and Central New York can expect:

– Blizzard warnings are active in parts of Western New York from 10 p.m. until Friday at 4 p.m. Similarly tough conditions are possible in the North Country.
