The Mets officially announced a one-year deal with free-agent reliever Dellin Betances on Tuesday. Betances’ deal has a player option for 2021. He could trigger a player option for ’22 if he reaches certain thresholds in ’21, though it’s not a guaranteed third-year option, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.
Betances, a New York native, is staying in his hometown after spending his first eight MLB seasons with the Yankees. The 31-year-old right-hander missed almost all of 2019 due to injury — he didn’t pitch until September due to right shoulder and lat injuries, then suffered a freak partial left Achilles tear jumping off the mound celebrating a strikeout in his first and only game back. But he’s expected to be ready for the 2020 season.
Right-handed reliever Dellin Betances and the New York Mets are in agreement on a one-year deal, sources tell ESPN. The deal includes two player options.

The Mets, in the meantime, bolster a bullpen that can’t get worse years from Edwin Díaz or Jeurys Familia. If Seth Lugo remains dominant and the Mets get bouncebacks from Díaz, Familia and Betances — or even two of the three — it’s one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
