Thousands still in the dark, cold as NYSG works to restore power in parts of region

In the dark and cold as winter storm knocks out power

Update: Tuesday, 6:30 a.m.

While there are significantly fewer outages in the Southern Tier this morning after a powerful winter storm wreaked havoc on households in Steuben, Tompkins, and Schuyler counties.

As of 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday – the following counties have the highest density of outages:

– Steuben: 1,429
– Sullivan: 1,896
– Broome: 1,690
– Chemung: 779

Both Schuyler and Tompkins counties have less than 120 customers without power.

The outage prompted officials to open two warming shelters for residents in Steuben County, who had the most outages locally.

Those warming stations were located in Canisteo and Addison.

Officials with NYSEG said they were working a quickly as possible – but that the electrical system in Steuben and other parts of the Southern Tier were ‘significantly damaged’. Some of the areas where crews were working were rural enough that it made repairs difficult to execute.
