On Thursday, the Rochester diocese became the first in the state and the 20th in the country to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
As part of the filing, many documents will be sealed – including those related to sexual abuse.
“We’re after the truth. We’re after protection of children and we can’t arrive at that without getting the truth,” survivor Pete Saracino said in reaction to the move.
Yet the filing allows protections that will keep doors open for 360,000 parishioners at 86 parishes. Three thousand students will continue to attend Catholic schools.
