People living in New York have been receiving fake letters that demand immediate payment for supposed outstanding tax debt and make threats.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance issued an alert Friday about the fake letter, saying that the threatening letter should not be taken seriously. The Department outlined specific information to look for on letters to ensure it is legitimate. Those include a Tax Department logo, complete return mailing address, options to respond online, by phone, or by mail, Tax Department website address, and explanations for why the letter was sent and rights for the recipient as a taxpayer.
