Officers, inmate involved in incident at Auburn Community Hospital

Sheriff Brian Schenck reports that on August 12th at approximately 9:30 p.m. an inmate at the Cayuga County Jail was transported by ambulance to Auburn Community Hospital after complaining of a medical condition.

The inmate, identified as Justin McDeid, 29, formerly of Auburn was accompanied by Sheriff’s Custody Officers while outside the jail facility.

While at the hospital McDeid initiated a physical confrontation with Sheriff’s personnel. During the confrontation, McDeid physically removed keys from one Officer’s possession. The keys were recovered from McDeid and additional restraints were applied with the assistance of hospital staff.

The two Officers that were involved in the incident were both evaluated at the hospital for minor injuries and released. At no time was McDeid ever out of the physical custody of Sheriff’s personnel.

The Sheriff says was discharged from the hospital and returned to the Cayuga County Jail. He says McDeid was arrested and arraigned in Auburn City Court on August 14th.

He was committed to the Cayuga County Jail without bail and held for action of the Superior Court.

McDeid was charged with felony robbery in the third degree, and obstructing governmental administration.
