New sewage overflow prompts closure in downtown Auburn

Another sewer overflow occurred into the Owasco River by 20 Genesee St. in Auburn following a series of strong thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and night.

According to an NY Alert notification, about 17,000 gallons of partially treated water overflowed into the Owasco River Tuesday. The discharge flowed for a little less than an hour, Auburn Sewer Water Supervisor Tom Gabak said Wednesday.

As a result of the overflow, both Genesee Street’s westbound lanes by Dunkin Donuts have been blocked off as crews work on the sewer lines. Gabak said the complete westbound closure should only last for the rest of Wednesday.
