As Zack Wheeler walked off the mound Friday night for what might have been the final time in a Mets uniform, many of the 33,776 in attendance at Citi Field stood to serenade him. It may not be inevitable that the Mets trade Wheeler before the July 31 Deadline, but a significant chance remains. Fans who have watched him since 2013 know that as well as anyone.
The three runs Wheeler allowed in a 6-3 win over the Pirates served to boost his trade stock, giving scouts reassurance that he is healthy after missing three weeks with a right shoulder impingement. Wheeler’s health was indeed obvious, and his effectiveness plain to see, as he struck out seven and allowed six hits in his return from the injured list.
