Both publicly and privately, Mets officials have maintained that they have no interest in blowing up the team’s core prior to the July 31 Trade Deadline. A few deals at the margins make sense as the Mets try to find value for their impending free agents, but the team has little intention of dealing anyone who holds value for them in 2020.
That means Pete Alonso, of course, as well as Jacob deGrom and Jeff McNeil — the Mets’ three All-Stars. It also means Michael Conforto, an All-Star himself two seasons ago. Remember him? Until Tuesday, Conforto had been the quietest member of the Mets’ nucleus, offering bottom-line production with a fair bit of streakiness. At Target Field, Conforto gave the Mets a signature performance, going 4-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI and a game-changing leaping catch in a 3-2 win over the Twins.
