Town of Geneva gets $25K grant by meeting solar goal

The town will be getting $25,000 for a stormwater control project and could turn that into $100,000 after meeting a goal for a community solar project.

Town Supervisor Mark Venuti said more than 400 subscribers signed up for the Geneva Community Power project by the June 26 deadline. The town is working with Joule Assets, an energy efficiency company in Westchester County that is installing a solar farm about 200 miles southeast of Geneva.

Venuti and Jacob Fox, the town’s Climate Smart coordinator, said savings are expected to be 10 percent for subscribers who get their electricity from New York State Electric & Gas. People will continue to get their electric from NYSEG, but now will receive two bills — one from NYSEG and one from the solar farm developer.

“The solar farm is under construction and should be online near the end of the year, so people should start to see the change in their bills, credit for electric and then a bill from the solar farm developer for 90 percent, in December,” Venuti said, adding the town is planning a celebration event later this month.
