Gov. Andrew Cuomo at a press conference on Friday said he remains skeptical a bill legalizing marijuana in New York can pass by June 19, the scheduled end of the legislative session.
“I am dubious at this point about the likelihood of success,” Cuomo said. “The Senate sponsor of the bill said if the Assembly passes it first and if the governor were to campaign on it then may be it would pass. That is a lot of ‘ifs’ in that sentence. So, that doesn’t give me much confidence.”
Cuomo added he believes the bill can be approved in the Assembly, but doubts it can can pass in the Senate. Democrats hold comfortable majorities in both chambers.
The legalization of marijuana remains one of the more prominent issues for the end of the session next month. Lawmakers have in recent weeks amended the legislation to bring it closer to what Cuomo proposed earlier this year, including the creation of an Office of Cannabis Management.
