Voters to decide if former SMS property in Seneca Falls can be sold

The former SMS property at 109 Ovid St. could be up for sale.

The property was purchased by the Bridgeport Fire District as a possible site for a new firehouse.

Now the Board of Commissioners of the fire district has declared that it is seeking voter approval to sell it. The commissioners approved a motion April 9 authorizing the sale of the surplus land, a parcel with a fair value in excess of $50,000.

Residents of the fire district will have the final say on the motion with voting scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. May 13 at the firehouse at 2528 Lower Lake Road. Everyone registered to vote in the district and living in it for at least 30 days prior to May 13 are eligible to vote in the special election.

The Board of Commissioners also approved a resolution April 9 authorizing the transfer of $49,000 from the capital reserve account to the general operating account for the purchase of air packs and related equipment for fire protection purposes.
