Sanchez, Gardner go deep to power ailing Yankees

The Yankees’ depth is being tested in the early going, but their expectations have not changed, believing that they continue to field a team capable of making this a special season in the Bronx. They displayed some of that mettle on Monday, shaking off a pair of surprising injuries to their roster.

Hours after Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andujar landed on the injured list, Gary Sánchez and Brett Gardner homered to support Domingo Germán’s solid effort and Aaron Judge turned in a potentially game-saving catch in the eighth inning as the Yankees defeated the Tigers, 3-1, at Yankee Stadium.

Having earned a place in the rotation with a strong spring, Germán limited the Tigers to an unearned run and one hit over five innings. He walked five batters but struck out seven, tossing 79 pitches before yielding to the bullpen.
