A Steuben County man faces federal child porn charges after investigators allege he kept on his phone about 1,000 photos of underage girls engaged in sexual acts.
An investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Feb. 28 upgraded the charges against Daryl Sumeriski, 50, a month after he was initially arrested by the Bath Police Department.
Sumeriski has been charged with a federal felony count of receipt and possession of child pornography. He's being held in the Steuben County jail while awaiting further court action.
The investigation began Jan. 19 after Bath police in Steuben County were alerted about the potential allegations by the Catholic Charities Weider House — an 18-bed Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services-licensed facility, with an average length of stay of three to six months.
Investigators interviewed residents and a staff member at Weider House, where at the time, Sumeriski was a temporary resident.
