Route 38A in southern Cayuga County reopens after cargo spill

A corn spill closed down a three-mile stretch of Route 38A in Niles and Moravia for about an hour Wednesday morning.

Both south and northbound lanes were temporarily closed between Globe Road in Niles and Buckley Hill Road in Moravia at 10:50 a.m. due to a cargo spill, according to a New York 511 Alert. State troopers said local fire police shut the road down.

Cayuga County 911 dispatchers said a trailer on Route 38A spilled corn. State police said there was no accident or trailer rollover, but somehow the corn escaped the vehicle.

A New York 511 Alert announced the road was reopened at 11:40 a.m.
