Gov. Andrew Cuomo Thursday issued an executive order extending the property tax payment deadline for numerous municipalities throughout the state, including Cayuga County, after severe winter storms made payment difficult for some.
To accommodate those affected by the Jan. 19 storm, the executive order retroactively extends the period for paying taxes without interest or penalty to 21 days from the original due date.
In Cayuga County, an extension has been granted for payments to the county itself and the town of Mentz. The town of Elbridge in neighboring Onondaga County was also granted an extension.
According to Cuomo’s executive order, the Jan. 19 storm, which Cuomo declared a state of emergency for, hampered travel and postal operations in many parts of the state, making payment by the due date “exceedingly difficult.”
