Seneca County Deputy Colton Rice recently completed a five-day, 36-hour course focused on operating a law enforcement vessel.
The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that Rice completed the Marine Patrol Vessel Operator’s Course through the Marine Services Bureau of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
The intensive, hands-on program aims to professionalize and standardize the vessel-operation duties of marine patrol officers.
Along with practical work, participants must complete classroom sessions and a nighttime session underway.
Admission requires prior successful completion of the Marine Law Enforcement Course.
Instruction covers vessel handling and maneuvering, seamanship, towing operations, search and rescue, charting and the use of marine electronics.
